The Harry Potter book series, written by British author JK Rowling and whose first book was published in 1997, was completed with its last book in 2007, while its film adaptations began in 2001 and appeared before the audience with a series of 8 films. We met many different characters throughout the stories in which we were guests of the magical adventures of Harry Potter and his friends. One of them is Remus Lupin.
Remus Lupine first appeared in the book Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. He is also a friend of Harry’s father, a companion of the Phoenix. One of his most interesting features is that he is actually a werewolf. Let’s take a closer look at the interesting information about Remus Lupine, who has become one of the most popular characters of the series due to these features.

More interestingly, Lupin’s father’s name is also wolf. The name Lyall is derived from the Old Norse word Liulfr, meaning wolf. He hated his own Patronus:
It may sound a bit like Remus Lupine himself, who taught Harry Potter the Patronus spell, but in fact he hated not all Patronuses, but only his own. Even though he has been a werewolf since the age of four, Remus Lupine, who still does not like turning into this monster, has always had the full moon as his greatest fear. We saw this in the boggart scene. During the lesson, Remus Lupin showed everyone how to turn the boggart into their greatest fear, and the boggart took the shape of a glowing sphere. Even though everyone, including Harry, thought it was a globe, it was actually a full moon.
Boggarts have another important role in Remus Lupine’s life. Lupin’s mother, Hope, encountered a boggart while walking in the forest one day and was very scared. Just then, Lupin’s father Lyall stepped in and neutralized the boggart. This is how the two met for the first time, loved each other, got married and thus Remus Lupine was born.
He dealt with werewolf prejudices throughout his life:
Remus Lupine has had great difficulties throughout his life because he has been a werewolf for almost as long as he can remember, but inside he has never been like one of them. That’s why he always stayed away from people and used preventive potions. Even his own father was a harsh man who argued that werewolves should die. But Remus Lupine never accepted this and struggled with prejudice against werewolves throughout his life.
Remus Lupine was turned into a werewolf for revenge:
Perhaps the saddest story about Remus Lupine is the story of his being turned into a werewolf. Remus’ father, Lyall Lupine, worked at the Ministry of Magic. One day, Death Eater Fenrir Greyback was brought here for interrogation. He had heard of Lyall’s hatred towards werewolves, but his lenient treatment of him during the interrogation irritated him and he thought they pitied him. To take revenge, he went to Lyall’s house the same night and turned his four-year-old son Remus into a werewolf.
It was Dumbledore who pushed him to become a teacher:
Remus Lupine was indeed a master wizard in Defense Against the Dark Arts, but he never considered teaching because of the prejudices of others. Besides, he was uneasy about controlling the process of turning into a werewolf. At this point, Albus Dumbledore stepped in. He promised him as much wolfsbane potion as he wanted if he accepted his offer to teach. Although this potion did not completely eliminate the transformation, it did alleviate the effects. For this reason, Remus Lupine has always been grateful to Severus Snape, who made these potions, even if he did not like them at all.
His fight in the Battle of Hogwarts was rewarded by:
Remus Lupine, who led a group tasked with defending the school during the Battle of Hogwarts, did his best, but was eventually killed. This great struggle was later rewarded and he was given the Order of Merlin. This decoration is the highest honor given to wizards and witches. Remus Lupine was also the first werewolf to receive the Order of Merlin. Among those who received this decoration, there are names such as Newt Scamander, Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall.
Rowling is very sorry for killing Remus Lupine:
JK Rowling, the author of the series, made many statements about the story and characters in the following years. One of them was about Remus Lupine. The author, who said that he never planned for him to die, said that Arthur Weasley had to die because he was alive. He even apologized to all readers for this death in a post he made on the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts.
