Many professions and hobbies all over the world are still monopolized by men. Most of the players are men. However, there are many different reasons for this. In particular, the pressure and abuse that men exert on women in games can turn many women away from the very beginning of the road.
Here, a study was conducted to draw attention to this issue. The study also revealed the extent of abuse that women are exposed to in online games.
One in 10 actresses are more likely to commit suicide because of abuse
Of the 4,000 female gamers surveyed by Sky Broadband, 49 percent reported being abused or harassed while streaming or playing games. Unfortunately, this rate rises to 75 percent for women aged 18-24.
80 percent of women affected by online harassment stated that the messages and comments received were of a sexual nature, and 35 percent stated that the messages contained violence.
On the other hand, as a result of the research, it was revealed that one out of every four female actors “feels depressed” and 27 percent worry that threats may turn into attacks in real life.
While 25 percent of respondents said they would not report abuse, 31 percent of female gamers said they lied about their gender in online games to avoid attention.
Male actors also confirmed this survey. 51 percent of the men stated that they personally witnessed the harassment and abuse of women during the game. In addition, 66 percent of both genders say that women are more likely to be harassed than men.
Last month, Women in Games CEO Marie-Claire Isaaman said that “many people” were attacked or battered at this year’s GDC event.
