May 22 is known as “Bitcoin Pizza Day” among the crypto community. But did you know some facts about today?

10,000 Bitcoin was only $41 at that time

Buying pizza with 10,000 BTC, Hanyecz spent exactly $41. If the numbers are correct, the BTC price is roughly $0.004 at the time of the sale.

Hanyecz had to wait 4 days for his order

Hanyecz waited a while for the order. He wrote on the Bitcoin.org forums on Tuesday, May 18, to find someone who could order him a pizza. He was able to finish the order in 4 days.

Bought more than two pizzas with 10,000 BTC

But Hanyecz didn’t stop with just two pizzas. He tried to push the limit in June and added in his post that the deal was an “open offer”. “As long as I have money (I usually have plenty of money) I will always trade 10,000 BTC for 2 of these pizzas,” he wrote on June 12. “If anyone is interested, please let me know,” he added.

Pizza ordering, Jercos finally sold his Bitcoin

As the Pizza Day holiday grew, it didn’t take long for Jeremy “Jercos” Sturdivant, who ordered the pizza to Hanyecz, to become the center of attention again. Five years after the purchase, he would give his only interview to a website called “Bitcoin Who’s Who” in 2015. Sturdivant said at the time that “a currency had to be spent”, noting to the possible dismay of current HODLers that the 10,000 BTC he received “returned quickly into the economy” when they were worth about $400 in total.

Bitcoin pizza day was not originally celebrated

While Bitcoin Pizza Day is widely known today, there are few records of any celebration before 2014 . This date didn’t matter as Bitcoin awareness was low prior to 2013.

Bitcoin pizza day is not the first “Bitcoin holiday”

Before pizza day, April 28, 2011 was announced as “Satoshi Disappearance Day”. Although BTC Pizza Day happened a little earlier, it took a while to become a holiday, most likely because the price hasn’t really risen yet.
