Today, while the news of cyber attacks continues to come at a great speed, these attacks cause many companies to lose their data and experience substantial financial losses. In the crypto money market, just like in other companies, such cyber attacks can occur from time to time.
Axie Infinity is a popular game that allows users to earn cryptocurrency by playing games. Many people who are interested in the cryptocurrency market must have heard of this game. The reason why the game, which uses the blockchain infrastructure, came to the fore today was that money was stolen from its infrastructure by a hacker.
Hacker stole 600 million dollars from crypto game
To briefly mention Axie Infinity; It is a game where we feed and raise our cute little monsters called Axie, and then make them fight against the opponents that will come our way. Of course, while doing this, users can deposit or withdraw money with the blockchain infrastructure called Ronin. The Ronin blockchain is a system that is protected by network nodes, and money cannot be stolen unless most of these nodes are accessed. The small number of these network nodes allows transactions to be faster and more efficient, but also makes the infrastructure of the game more insecure.
Thanks to this vulnerability, a hacker managed to steal 173,600 Ethereum (approximately 600 million dollars) from the infrastructure of the game. Upon this, with the statement made by the operator of the Ax Infinity game, it was announced that the withdrawal and receiving operations from the infrastructure of the game were closed and cannot be opened until new security measures are taken. It was announced that the hacker in question disabled five network nodes in order to do this. At the same time, Sky Mavis stated that this process was carried out through a shortcut used to alleviate the user load on the company network.
Following this incident, the company is working to improve the security of Ronin infrastructure and be prepared for potential threats. “We know that trust must be earned and we are using every resource available to us to implement the most advanced security measures and processes to prevent future attacks,” Sky Mavis said.
