The Titanic, which sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean after colliding with an iceberg in April 1912, is undoubtedly the most famous ship in world history. Investigations about the ship, which buried more than 1500 people, are still ongoing. A few months ago, never-before-seen images of the ship’s wreck were shared.

Today, a brand new study on the wreck of the ship was shared. Researchers have created a digital version of the wreckage, giving us an unprecedented look at the ship, the BBC reported.

The 3D model was created using more than 700 thousand images of the wreck

The project was run in conjunction with Magellan Limited, known for their deep-water exploration, and production company Atlantic Productions. Researchers from the two companies took more than 700,000 images of the Titanic wreck, located about 3,800 meters below the ocean’s surface, in the summer of 2022. These images were then used to create a 3D digital copy of the ship.

“What we’ve created is a highly realistic photorealistic 3D model of the most goose,” said Gerhard Seiffert of Magellan. Previously, the captured images only allowed you to see a small area of the debris at a time. “This model allows people to zoom in and out, and for the first time see the entire wreckage at once.”

After the ship was scanned, researchers were left with 16TB of data and 4K video. After months of operations on this data, videos and photos of the 3D model appeared. Atlantic Productions also shot a documentary of the process.

The model has many details, from the serial numbers on the ship to the unopened champagne bottles. Experts say the 3D replica could provide historians and engineers with more information about the sinking of the Titanic.
