The inability of Facebook and Instagram platforms connected to Meta to protect user data is costly. In Ireland alone, the compensation penalty paid by Meta exceeded 1 billion dollars.

Record penalty for Meta

Last year, the Irish Data Protection Board fined Meta $267 million for failing to clearly explain how the Facebook network uses data from European users. A further $410 million was subsequently fined for the Instagram network’s policies towards child users.

Now, another $277 million in damages has been ordered for leaking data such as phone numbers, birth dates, email addresses, and locations of 533 million users in April last year. When small amount of compensations are taken into account, it has exceeded 1 billion dollars.

Although Meta claimed that he was abused by cyber attackers and patched the vulnerability, he later agreed to the compensation given by the board. It is not yet known whether the firm will appeal the case.
