An important finding was obtained during the excavations carried out in Adıyaman in order to solve the mystery of the Commagene Kingdom. A military diploma made of bronze, which was determined to belong to the 123rd year, was found. The diploma found in the Ancient City of Perre belonged to a person named Calcilius Antiquus and was prepared by the order of the Roman Emperor Hadrianus, as he had served in the army for 20 years. So what was written on that diploma?
Ancient history and languages expert Prof. Dr. The examinations made by Mustafa Hamdi Sayar made it possible to understand who the diploma belongs to and for what purpose it was given. Adıyaman Museum Director Mehmet Alkan explained the information obtained as a result of the investigations made by Sayar as follows:
Here is the military diploma from 1898 years ago
According to the statements made by Mehmet Alkan, the number of bronze military diplomas like this is about 100 thousand in total. However, about 800 of them managed to survive. Work on 650 of them is still in progress. Expressing that the military diploma found is exciting for the 2021 excavation season, Alkan stated that they wish to find great discoveries in 2022 as well.
By the way, let’s say that the ruins found in the Ancient City of Perre this year are not just this diploma. As a result of their excavations, archaeologists managed to unearth water channels, large blocks of stones, a historical Roman fountain and many other artifacts. The Perre excavations, which started in 2001 for the first time, seem to continue in the coming years.
