Taiwanese computer company Acer has officially confirmed that it has suffered a major data breach. However, Acer underlined that customer data was not stolen. It was explained that the data obtained by the hackers consisted of those contained in an internal server available to repair technicians.

Acer has been hacked

As you can see from the screenshot below, the amount of data stolen is 160 GB. It is stated that this high amount of data includes confidential in-house slides and presentations. In addition, personnel documents for technical support, Windows ISO files, technical manuals, software tools, product information and a large number of BIOS materials are also said to be among the stolen.

In addition, technical schematics and various documents of the Acer V206HQL monitor were shared to prove the accuracy of the stolen data. It is stated that this dataset, which is 160 GB in total, will be sold to the highest bidder. Cryptocurrency Monero (XMR), which is difficult to follow, is accepted as a means of payment.

For Acer, this cyberattack in February 2023 is not the first of its kind. The company was hacked by the REvil ransomware gang in October 2021 and was threatened with leaking confidential financial documents. The REvil gang demanded a record $50 million ransom from Acer for the decryption key. Then, in October of the same year, the Acer India group was hacked by a gang known as Desorden, and thousands of customer data were stolen.
