The new awards of the Carbon Removal competition run by XPrize and the Musk Foundation have been distributed. In support of their work, $1 million in Milestone awards were given to each of the 15 teams worldwide. The competition will end in 2025.

$20 million prize has been distributed so far

Elon Musk announced the $100 million XPrize Carbon Removal competition to combat climate change and rebalance the world’s carbon cycle. The second milestone of the competition has been passed and the second prizes have been distributed.

The solutions presented in the first phase of the competition, which examined many solutions for decarbonisation, such as ecosystem restoration, biochar, agricultural solutions, and organic and inorganic ocean solutions, actually work, achieve net negative emissions, and can reliably and permanently reduce carbon dioxide for at least 100 years. They were evaluated according to the criteria that they imprisoned in a sustainable way and finally showed a sustainable way to reach the gigaton scale.

1133 applications were made in the competition, and a total of 15 teams from Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Kenya, the Netherlands, Philippines, the United Kingdom and the United States were selected and they received prizes of one million dollars to support their projects.

Current distributed awards are only given to support projects. All participants of the competition are still going on and they have a chance to win.
