New rumors suggest that Intel’s 14th generation desktop processors, codenamed Meteor Lake, will require a new LGA 2551 socket, meaning current LGA 1700 motherboards will only support two CPU generations. So those who want to upgrade their processors will have to upgrade their motherboards as well.

LGA 2551 measures 38 x 46mm, ie 0.5mm wider and 1mm longer than LGA 1700. Attaching more than 50% more pins to a similar architecture means the pin density will be much higher. This will likely be the company’s first DDR5 platform.

New Meteor Lake processors will arrive in the last quarter of 2023

Meteor Lake processors will arrive in Q4 2023 and have several new technologies developed by Intel expected to be. The processors will offer a new flooring architecture with TDPs ranging from 5 W to 125 W.

The processor will use Intel 4 compute nodes and will be the first to feature new architectures for both P-cores and E-cores. The internal graphics unit will be built on TSMC’s N3 node and will have twice as many ABs as Alder Lake. Everything will be put together using Intel’s Foveros 3D packaging technology.

It’s unfortunate that Intel plans to switch sockets again after only two CPU generations, as it did with the LGA 1200. Its rival AMD used the AM4 socket on four generations of Zen.
