Ara Güler had a very wooly personality. When he was in high school, he was trying to learn cinematography in film studios, attended the theater courses of Muhsin Ertuğrul, and struggled to become a director and playwright. While continuing his economics education at university, he started to work as a journalist.
Introducing himself not as an artist, but as “the photojournalist of the world”; Güler, who said that he was not a master but only a person who “understands mastery”, was quite modest compared to his achievements. Trying to work as a photojournalist for international press organizations after only 3 years of journalism experience, Güler was selected as one of the 7 best photographers in the world in 1953. In 1962, he received the title of Master of Leica, which very few photographers have been awarded.
Afterwards, his exhibitions were opened in countries such as France, Japan, Canada, the USA and Germany, and he started to make photo interviews with world-renowned names. Among the names he photographed were Picasso, Dali, Bertrand Russell, Alfred Hitchcock. Even Picasso, who did not pose for the photographers, posed for Ara Güler’s lens.
He shot the documentary “The End of the Hero” about the dismantling of the battleship Yavuz, and wrote books on photography and history. Güler left a great mark on this world by opening exhibitions that will never end. . . Now, let’s take a look at 10 people who have made their name known to the world through the eyes of Ara Güler.
